The ABC has apologised for airing an interview in which Melbourne breakfast radio host Red Symons asks the ABC journalist Beverley Wang if she is yellow.

The network removed the interview from its website on Friday after an outcry over Symons’s comments.

Words likening Australia’s dead ‘Johnnies’ to Ottoman ‘Mehmets’ disappear as 1985 Gallipoli monument is restored

The Turkish government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has removed from a revered Anzac Cove memorial the familiar words attributed to Turkey’s founding father, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, likening Australia’s dead “Johnnies” to Ottoman “Mehmets” and welcoming them to rest in his country’s soil.

The renovation of the 1985 monument has heightened suspicions in Australia and Turkey that the refurbished memorial could reflect a growing Islamist interpretation by the Erdoğan administration of Australia’s part in the 1915 British-commanded Anzac invasion of – and later retreat from – Gallipoli.

Russia investigation: Mike Pence hires personal legal counsel

Pence’s office confirmed he retained Richard Cullen to assist him in responding to inquiries by special counsel Robert Mueller

Vice president Mike Pence has hired outside legal counsel to oversee his response to investigations into possible collusion between Russia and president Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Pence’s office confirmed on Thursday that he retained Richard Cullen, chairman of McGuireWoods LLP, to assist him in responding to inquiries by special counsel Robert Mueller.
